God and the Single Mom
She held her son close, like her, he was weak from hunger, parched from desert travel. Many she passed refused to meet her eye. If only someone would hold up a hand to signal her to take a rest, or better still offer a dripping of spring water
Her lot in life was hard. A woman alone was a woman ignored, overlooked, unprotected. She had scant hope save one and onto that she staked her future and that of her tired young one.
She believed that God would serve as father to her boy, as husband in her loneliness. As the mother and son wandered, she wished for time past.
Celebrations had been numerous when her husband was still alive. At birthdays they got out the meager musical instruments they owned, clapped hands, and sang. Together they laughed and danced. Now she felt lost, trying to find a place to fit in, be accepted.
As the forced one foot ahead of the other, she clung to the words of King David. He said that God was good and that He defended the window. That He set the solitary into families. How she savored that promise.
The fatherless, the single parent, the widower- all have a special place in God"s heart.
